Convention 2016

OFO Convention Birds at Kingston, 23-25 September 2016: 181 species

The total species reported for the three-day OFO Convention at Kingston and nearby areas (September 23 to 25) currently stands at 181 species. This total is the second highest recorded at a convention. The highest total was the 184 species observed last year at Point Pelee. In third place now are the 178 species reported at Presqu'ile (2012) and Point Pelee (2013).

Migration-inducing weather to start the weekend, an unusually warm September that encouraged lingering species, 256 registrants, 31 field trips led by expert birders, and the rich birding potential of the many areas visited were factors that contributed to the remarkable number of species observed during the Kingston convention.

Noteworthy birds included: Eurasian Wigeon, Golden Eagle, Little Gull, Lesser Black-backed Gull, Hooded Warbler, Grasshopper Sparrow, and Nelson's Sparrow. (Note that the Eurasian Wigeon was found by Dave Milsom, contrary to the information I had at the Saturday banquet.)

Total species reported for the following groups are shown in parentheses: ducks (20), shorebirds (18), gulls (6), warblers (23) and sparrows (11).

The complete species list is presented below.

Thanks again to all the organizers, trip leaders and participants for a very successful convention.

Hope to see you at the next OFO Convention at Long Point on 22-24 September 2017.
